Time to Celebrate: Valentine’s Day Ideas for Your Love

I feel like when it comes to Valentine’s Day, you either love it or you hate it. But regardless of your feeling towards America’s Valentine's Day Ideasfavorite Hallmark Holiday, Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Literally … it’s two days from now. Do you have a plan? It’s okay if you don’t because I’m about to help you make a great one.

From traditional to unique, people celebrate the holiday of love in so many different ways. It was hard to make up my mind of which to include in this post but I finally selected a few favorites.

Traditional Ideas:

  1. A romantic night out: This is pretty much what everybody thinks of first. The classic dinner and a movie, or maybe some dancing, always goes over pretty well. I do have some tough love news to give you though; if you haven’t made a reservation by now … good luck getting one now for Sunday’s holiday dinner. Lucky for you procrastinators, many restaurants, McKinney & Doyle included, will offer their V-Day specials all weekend long. You don’t REALLY need Valentine’s Day to celebrate your love, do you? Go out tonight or tomorrow! Or be a rebel and go out on Monday.
  2. A romantic night in: This has become the tradition in the McBoland household (that’s the nickname I gave to my household because I’m adorable). We swing by the farmer’s market, okay or the grocery store, and pick up what we call “fancy” ingredients – usually a nice cut of steak and some scallops. We cook together, drink too much wine, and invent a new cocktail. It’s always fun! Plus, I can stay in my pajamas and Angry Bird slippers, which is frowned upon at most restaurants.

Non-Traditional Ideas

  1. Tour your town: This is fun because it’s still a day/night out together but rather than the standard dinner and a movie, check out the tourist attractions in your town/city and be a tourist! Check out art gallaries, museums, monuments, carriage rides, dolphin cruises (Florida girl over here), etc. Oh! And don’t forget to take ALL the pictures!
  2. Spa day: I feel like everyone just assumes that Valentine’s Day is mainly for females. That doesn’t seem very fair to me so I say you make the day about both parties. Spend the day getting spoiled! Check out different spa treatments available and splurge on those instead of pricey roses and chocolates.
  3. Make candy: You could obviously go out and buy each other a box of chocolates OR you could look up a recipe and make it yourself. Turn it into a competition and see who’s the better chocolatier.

I always hear people say that Valentine’s Day is stupid because you shouldn’t need a specific day to celebrate true love. No, we don’t NEED the day. But it’s a fun way to spend the day spoiling each other and shutting out the rest of the world and your to-do list. No matter which route you take, traditional or more unique, enjoy yourselves and get wrapped up in whatever it was that made you fall in love in the first place.

Rebecca McKinney

I was born a foodie. My dad is a chef, baker, and restaurant owner and my mom might as well be because she owns whatever kitchen she walks into. I grew up working in my family’s restaurant and bakery in Pawling, New York – McKinney and Doyle. I started behind the bakery counter at 12 years old after begging my parents to let me start working. At 16 I worked as a hostess. By 18 I was serving tables and training behind the bar where I then worked every other weekend throughout my college career. Even now, when I am visiting my family in New York, I help out where I’m needed. To make a long story short, the food and restaurant industry has been my life for as long as I can remember.

I wanted to create this blog for a few reasons. First and foremost, to share tips, tricks, and knowledge about the food and beverage industry in general but also to help people see a different side of the restaurant world. Every restaurant has a totally unique culture and world within it. I want to help open people’s eyes to more than how fast the service is or how easy or hard it is to secure a reservation.

So, thanks for stopping by! I welcome your ideas, input, and feedback and hope you enjoy!

Eat well & travel often,

Becky McKinney
