Things to Do This Weekend: April 16-19

Things to Do This Weekend April 16 to 18One of the best things about living in a small town is the sense of community and support that exists among the local businesses. If one store needs change on a Sunday when the bank is closed, take a short walk next door. When the farm down the street has an overabundance of tomatoes, you host a tomato themed dinner (We’ve done this with tomatoes, corn, and pumpkins and it’s always been a huge success). And when you start a blog and events are planned in your hometown, you write about them. With the weather warming up we’ll notice more and more local escapades available for enjoyment. Let’s start with this weekend. Better yet, let’s start with today and cover the entire weekend in the Pawling area.

Okay so Sherman, CT isn’t exactly Pawling, but it is super close and today from 11 AM through 7 PM you can check out a photography and mixed media exhibition at the Sherman Library. The library is located at 1 Sherman Center in Sherman in Sherman. If you can’t make it today, you can catch later this weekend.

Friday 4/17: 11 AM – 6 PM
Saturday 4/18: 10 AM – 4 PM

After checking out some beautiful artwork, head back into Pawling for Ellis Paul performing at Darryl’s House. The show starts at 8 PM. You’ll need tickets for this one but you can grab them online here. It’s $25 for a reserved table and ticket or $15 for general admission. Ellis Paul is a folk singer who has been performing for over 20 years. Scope out his musical talent so you know why you don’t want to miss this show.

There’s always a good show to catch at Darryl’s House. On Friday night, catch Pop City at 9PM, on Saturday, James Hunter Six comes on at 9 as well and for the Sunday Fun Day crowd, Gedeon Luke and The People will be performing at eight. All performers have a short bio and some have video clips featuring their work on the Darryl’s House site. Simply scroll to the selected date and click “info” for all the details.

Pawling may be a small town, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to do. It’s a wonderful tightly knit community in which local businesses support each other and come together as often as possible. With the warmer weather arriving, you can expect to see more and more people out and about soaking in the sunshine and packing their social calendars. I’ll be keeping my eye on the events calendars so I can help keep you all in the loop.

Have a great weekend!

Rebecca McKinney

I was born a foodie. My dad is a chef, baker, and restaurant owner and my mom might as well be because she owns whatever kitchen she walks into. I grew up working in my family’s restaurant and bakery in Pawling, New York – McKinney and Doyle. I started behind the bakery counter at 12 years old after begging my parents to let me start working. At 16 I worked as a hostess. By 18 I was serving tables and training behind the bar where I then worked every other weekend throughout my college career. Even now, when I am visiting my family in New York, I help out where I’m needed. To make a long story short, the food and restaurant industry has been my life for as long as I can remember.

I wanted to create this blog for a few reasons. First and foremost, to share tips, tricks, and knowledge about the food and beverage industry in general but also to help people see a different side of the restaurant world. Every restaurant has a totally unique culture and world within it. I want to help open people’s eyes to more than how fast the service is or how easy or hard it is to secure a reservation.

So, thanks for stopping by! I welcome your ideas, input, and feedback and hope you enjoy!

Eat well & travel often,

Becky McKinney
