Tea For Every Mood

The holidays are over, it’s cold, and it gets dark earlier every day. The winter blues are impacting Tea for every moodeverybody and they’re a major drag. While I can’t do anything about the weather, I can help you beat the cloud that mid winter tends to cast over us and I can do so with tea. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an avid coffee drinker, but it’s amazing what a good cup of tea can do for our energy, mood, and productivity.

In fact, different types of tea can benefit us in TONS of ways! Below are ten teas for ten moods/situations.

  1. Unable to Sleep: For those days when you’re feeling exhausted and restless at the same time, make yourself a cup of lavender tea. It slows your blood circulation and nervous system activity while also promoting relaxation to help you sleep soundly.
  2. Stressed: Chamomile tea is perfect for those of us who struggle with stress and anxiety. It increases blood flow to the brain and counteracts the effect of cortisol – the stress hormone.
  3. Restless: This was an interesting one. To combat restlessness, go for a tart cherry tea. It works in a similar way to lavender tea in that it also slows down blood flow to help you feel more relaxed and calm.
  4. Tired: I know a lot of us (myself included) reach for an extra cup of coffee when we can’t wake up but black or chai tea can help just as much. Both contain natural stimulants, including caffeine, and will perk you right up!
  5. Feeling Emotional: Peppermint isn’t just for the holidays. Peppermint tea promotes emotional wellness and can keep you calm. So if you’re having a rough week or going through a hard time, reach for your favorite mug and some peppermint tea.
  6. Depression: The essential oil lemongrass helps to calm the senses and works as a great anti-depressant. Lemongrass tea is a great pantry staple, especially during the winter months when seasonal depression kicks in.
  7. Sluggish: If you’re feeling unproductive and sluggish, ginger tea is your answer. It has mood boosting elements that will lead to increased energy levels and feelings of warmth and comfort.
  8. Happiness: Masala Chai tea contains ginger, cardamom, and clove – all of which generate serotonin to help boost your mood and promote positive feelings.
  9. Angry: Even the happiest people in the world can get angry every now and then. If you find yourself feeling mad, a cup of citrus tea like lemon or orange will help boost your mood and reduce feelings of anger. In fact, the scent alone will calm you down.
  10. Exhausted and Out of It: Green tea is, in my opinion, the tea of all teas. Green tea contains L-theanine that increases alpha brain waves, similar to what happens when you meditate. It will help put you in a relaxed state and focus on the present moment. It’s also FULL of antioxidants so, yay!

I don’t know anybody who chugs a cup of hot tea, but just to be sure, I want to remind you that in order to reap the benefits of each tea, you’ll need to sip it slowly. A less obvious reminder: try to avoid adding sugar to your mug. Sugar will alter your blood sugar levels which can in turn, impact your mood and energy in a negative way. If you need a little something extra, opt for natural honey instead.

Are you a tea drinker? Do you have a favorite?

Rebecca McKinney

I was born a foodie. My dad is a chef, baker, and restaurant owner and my mom might as well be because she owns whatever kitchen she walks into. I grew up working in my family’s restaurant and bakery in Pawling, New York – McKinney and Doyle. I started behind the bakery counter at 12 years old after begging my parents to let me start working. At 16 I worked as a hostess. By 18 I was serving tables and training behind the bar where I then worked every other weekend throughout my college career. Even now, when I am visiting my family in New York, I help out where I’m needed. To make a long story short, the food and restaurant industry has been my life for as long as I can remember.

I wanted to create this blog for a few reasons. First and foremost, to share tips, tricks, and knowledge about the food and beverage industry in general but also to help people see a different side of the restaurant world. Every restaurant has a totally unique culture and world within it. I want to help open people’s eyes to more than how fast the service is or how easy or hard it is to secure a reservation.

So, thanks for stopping by! I welcome your ideas, input, and feedback and hope you enjoy!

Eat well & travel often,

Becky McKinney
