I’m not sure if it’s motherhood, the pandemic, or the fact that I’ve taken on several new projects over the last several weeks, but coffee has become an even more vital staple in my life than it was before (and that’s really saying something). Lucky for me, and anybody else who loves coffee, there are some pretty great benefits to drinking it. Hooray!

Before I dive into the benefits of your daily dose(s) of caffeine, the nutritionist in me thinks it’s important to state that not EVERY aspect of coffee is good for you. While there is nothing wrong with enjoying creamer or cream & sugar in your cup, that aspect isn’t adding to the benefits. This post is about the actual coffee part of your coffee. Cool? Cool.
Coffee itself is actually full of antioxidants and nutrients. Did you know it comes from a fruit? Here are a list of 5 amazing benefits to drinking coffee.
- It can improve physical performance: According to Healthline, “Caffeine stimulates your nervous system, signaling fat cells to break down body fat. But it also increases epinephrine (adrenaline) levels in your blood. This is the fight-or-flight hormone, which prepares your body for intense physical exertion. Caffeine breaks down body fat, making free fatty acids available as fuel. Given these effects, it’s unsurprising that caffeine can improve physical performance by 11–12%, on average. Therefore, it makes sense to have a strong cup of coffee about half an hour before you head to the gym.”
- Coffee contains essential nutrients: Specifically, a single cup of coffee contains 11% of the recommended daily amount of Riboflavin (vitamin B2), 6% of Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), 3% of both manganese and potassium, and 2% of magnesium and niacin (vitamin B3). Small percentages, sure … but I can’t be the only one who is most certainly having more than one cup of coffee a day. Numbers add up people!
- It can improve your energy levels. This one seems obvious, I know. That’s the point, right? But caffeine can do more than wake you up. Many studies show that caffeine can actually help improve various aspects of brain function (memory, mood, vigilance and reaction times).
- Coffee may help you burn fat. Caffeine has been proven to help you body burn fat more efficiently, but it can also boost our metabolic rate by anywhere from 3-11%. It should be noted however, that these effects diminish in the long-term, meaning that new coffee drinkers are more likely to notice this impact than those of us who have been drinking it for years already. Still cool though!
- It may decrease your risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Healthline reports, “Studies observe that people who drink coffee have a 23–50% lower risk of getting this disease. According to a large review of 18 studies in a total of 457,922 people, each daily cup of coffee was associated with a 7% reduced risk of type 2 diabetes”
If you’re like me, you didn’t really NEED extra reasons to enjoy your daily coffee routine, but we also won’t complain when we get them, right? Here at M&D, we’re honored to serve you a cup (or more) of this miracle drink! Stop by and see us!

I wanted to create this blog for a few reasons. First and foremost, to share tips, tricks, and knowledge about the food and beverage industry in general but also to help people see a different side of the restaurant world. Every restaurant has a totally unique culture and world within it. I want to help open people’s eyes to more than how fast the service is or how easy or hard it is to secure a reservation.
So, thanks for stopping by! I welcome your ideas, input, and feedback and hope you enjoy!
Eat well & travel often,
Becky McKinney
